Dear Friend
I have your letter of March 10th. It would not be a friendly act to encourage you to come to the southern states at this time with any other view than to take land and settle down to farming. All other pursuits are overcrowded. The agricultural prospects of the south are improving and the future outlook is rather encouraging. War in Europe, which seems imminent, may temporarily depress cotton, but I think a re-action will soon occur. We are about down to “hard paw” financially and, with good state Government, there is promise of a healthy upwards movement. The shrinkage in value since 1873 has played havoc, especially with holders of real estate, with which I was rather over-loaded but thanks to a kind Provider, am not bankrupt. My family are in good health and generally in comfortable circumstances. I am glad to hear from you and would be interested in learning more in reference to the welfare of yourself and family. With kind regards
Your friend L. P. Grant
