Atlanta Mar 25th 1874

Dear Bro. Albert

Your letter of the 20th came duly to hand. – In a business point of view, it is bad policy to submit a question of Right of way for a railway to a civil engineer who has been fighting Right of Way exactions for many years of professional experience. –

If you conveyed the Right of Way to Gordon’s Co and have no copy, the first step is to get a copy and submit it to me, or tell me where I can see the original. – If your deed is good for anything, it is in my opinion good for all the coal co. needs. – If it is good for nothing, then you can commence anew and claim a fair valuation for the land occupied, as well as injury from inconveniences resulting from the construction and use of the Road. – The claims should be just and fair and I can have no agency in the case.

You need not set up a claim against Gordon or any other person on the ground of friendship? Genl Gordon would doubtless do you justice as far as in his power but the whole matter has passed out of his hands and all his legal rights (or all his Co. ever had) have passed to the present Co. represented by Gov. Brown. – I would be glad to visit you and may do so soon but can do nothing in the Right of way matter without a copy of your deed to Gordon. – give my love to Annie and the family. We have had some severe affliction since you visited us. – I am fast growing old and worthless. My desire is to travel and relieve my mind from this treadmill life.

Do you hear from Maine. – Bro. Joseph is near his end in this world.

Truly your Bro. L. P. Grant

Mrs. M. C. Spiller

Dear Friend,

Yours of the 27th ult with letter of Mr. & Mrs Bree came duly to hand. – I return the latter to be preserved with other letters you hold. – I have no sanguine hopes of improvement in the value of real estate here in the fall, but the case cannot be worse than at present. – You mention a recompense for my trouble. – All the recompense I want is your confidence in my desire to aid you in this matter. – I have no power to force a sale and Mrs. Bree has no title by which she can place a mortgage on the premises. – The title remains in the Estate of Mr. Spiller until your claim is paid. My opinion is that you will be obliged to take the premises for the claim. I advise you to wait until November.

Death has again visited our family. – The younger daughter of John, named after her mother, Nannie Logan, died June 21 aged 20 months. – She could talk a little and was a sweet darling. – We ought not to mourn but the trial is bitter. – Mrs. Grant is absent from home at present. Lettie sends love to all. Remember me to the members of your family kindly. Truly your friend L. P. Grant
