Apl 16th 9

Dear Jones

Yours of the 14th from Montgy is at hand. I donated the lot on which your church at Opelika stands and contributed a small sum also towards its erection. – I have also donated sites for the Babtist & Methodist Churches. – This must suffice. – I must now set apart an eligible lot for my wife’s Church – The Presbyterian. – Our Church here is in a bad condition. The front has never been finished and the painting of the exterior is now in a deplorable condition. – We are pushed up closely to pay our Pastor. – I have invested about $3000.00 in it and must stand up square to the future work. –

In reference to the Sav. & Memphis R.R. you can get as large a subscription from Lee Co. as the people are disposed to vote, and I will bear my part of it, but outside of that I can make no cash subscription. – It is gratifying to hear of the improved prospects of your Ala. Roads. Georgia moves slowly but surely. – We shall yet make a record despite Bullock & Butler.

Remember me kindly to your family.

Yrs very truly

Levi Willard Esq

Springfield Ohio

Dear Sir

My apparent neglect in replying to your two letters has grown out of matters of family afflictions in part by which my business affairs have been much procrastinated. –

Mattie Dabney died at Staunton Va. where I had taken her and Lettie to school. – Her illness and the sad result engaged much of my time & thoughts for some two weeks. – Subsequently I was called to the bedside of my brother James H. in Tennessee who died on 22nd inst four days after I reached his house. I now have the satisfaction of enclosing a check on New York for the balance due on our joint note on behalf of Mrs. W. Frederic & myself. – As to the matter of calculating interest the commercial plan I believe is to calculate the amount on the full principal to the final payment – and on payts from the date of each to the final payment. I enclose statement which I hope will be satisfactory. – With kind regards to yourself & family I am Truly yours

Bentley D. Hasell Esq

40 & 42 Broadway New York

Dear Hasell

I wrote you some months ago in reference to the Bremen Steamers. – A Commissioner of Immigration was elected by our Legislature for the German States. – Co. S. Neil of our city was elected – a very excellent and acceptable man to our people. –

He will leave early in June and I have some idea of going out with him to Germany. If I go I shall take my younger son, and place him at a school near Bremen. –

Without any regular commission myself, I should go some what in behalf of the Rail Road interests of this state and being one of the oldest Engineers of the South, without pressing my question of privilege, would ask you to hand the matter of Col. Neil & myself to the Lloyd Co. – Of course the fare of my son (1st class) will be paid, and my own very cheerfully so, but we would not object to any privilege which the Line might see fit to accord. – Please write me on the subject at your earliest convenience.

Yrs truly

Atlanta June 23rd 1869

Col. Hulsey

Mayor of Atlanta

Dear Sir

I have been importuned by some of our best citizens to write articles for the press criticizing and denouncing the proposed extraordinary expenditure in tunneling (as it is termed) the Macon & Western R.R. on West Hunter Street. – I walked over the ground this morning, and concluded it better to have an interview with you, (and if you thought best) with the Special Committee or the Street Committee, and talk this matter over without any public discussion. – I am satisfied, Col., that this matter is not fully understood, and in this conviction, I make no reflection upon your Engineer. – He is asked to report upon certain things and he complies. – This is the most extraordinary expenditure ever asked of the Council in the history of this city considering the objects to be accomplished. If you were to-day to assess all of the property that is now really & truly affected by this question, it is not worth the amount that you must expend in carrying out this project.

Please reply and give me an interview at your office or mine.

Yrs very truly
